Mental Health

Mental health issues refer to a wide range of conditions that affect a person’s mental well-being, including mood disorders like depression and bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, trauma-related disorders like PTSD, eating disorders, and psychotic disorders like schizophrenia. These conditions can significantly impact a person’s thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and ability to function in daily life if left untreated.

How our Exercise Physiologists can help:

Assessment – Our talented exercise physiologists will conduct a comprehensive 60-minute evaluation, including medical history, assessment of mental health symptoms (e.g. depression, anxiety), physical activity levels, and quality of life measures.

Exercise Prescription – Based on the assessment, an individualised exercise program is developed tailored to the specific mental health condition, symptoms, limitations, and goals. This may involve aerobic exercise, resistance training, mind-body practices like yoga, and lifestyle counselling.

Mental Health Management – Exercise physiologists play a role in structured programs that combine exercise with other therapeutic interventions for managing mental health issues like depression, anxiety disorders, trauma-related disorders, etc. These are often part of a multidisciplinary approach.

Monitoring and Progression – Close monitoring of exercise responses, symptom changes, and safety precautions is done during sessions. The program is gradually progressed to improve cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility, and overall well-being.

Education – Providing education on the mental health benefits of exercise, stress management techniques, sleep hygiene, and promoting long-term adherence to an active lifestyle.

Collaboration – Working closely with psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, and other mental health professionals for an integrated approach to treatment and recovery.
